Channel and inter-channel morphology resulting from the long-term interplay of alongslope and downslope processes, NE Rockall Trough, NE Atlantic

چکیده
With this contribution we use a pair of overlapping 3D seismic surveys and two exploration wells to document the response long-lived slope channels onset bottom currents sweeping lower in NE Rockall Basin, offshore Ireland. Downslope gravity current activity, linked phase uplift, prevailed throughout Eocene led formation multiple channels, most notably large-scale sinuous channel complex (Channel 4 Complex) tied persistent sediment entry point on margin. Channels fed lobes floor basin, with increased axial tilting forcing flow parallel base slope. A margin-wide differential subsidence basin deepening Late then activated circulation across basin. Northward-flowing first erosionally refashioned creating prominent unconformity contourites that initially forming infill drifts. Bottom swept along obliquely upslope, building plastered drifts straddled sections still active channels. The modified amplified spurs separating interaction between downslope processes accreting built maintained relief allowed mouths extend further basinward over earlier lobes. Contourite-forced extension account depositional re-profiling represents another manifestation interplay currents. In case Rockall, accreted wedge mounded geometry resembles similar features elsewhere eastern Those have previously been ascribed mass-transport base-up initiation, however, similarities are so striking propose these also result by

Nitrogen fixation in the western English Channel (NE Atlantic Ocean)
In temperate Atlantic waters (18.8 to 20.1°C), biological nitrogen fixation has been demonstrated by 2 independent measurements: N-N2 incorporation and nifH identification in the DNA and expressed messenger RNA (mRNA). At 2 stations in the western English Channel, bulk waters were incubated with N-N2. At the high levels of particulate nitrogen (≤11.5 μmol N l–1), absolute fixation rates of 18.9...

Statistical emulation of landslide-induced tsunamis at the Rockall Bank, NE Atlantic
Statistical methods constitute a useful approach to understand and quantify the uncertainty that governs complex tsunami mechanisms. Numerical experiments may often have a high computational cost. This forms a limiting factor for performing uncertainty and sensitivity analyses, where numerous simulations are required. Statistical emulators, as surrogates of these simulators, can provide predict...
متن کاملReconnaissance Survey of the Irish Continental Shelf/Shelf Edge Atlantic Irish Regional Survey (AIRS) 1996 A GLORIA Survey of the Irish Continental Margin
The Atlantic Irish Regional Survey (AIRS96) sidescan sonar survey was carried out in August 1996. Covering an area of 200,000 km 2 it represented the largest reconnaissance seabed survey of the Irish Continental Shelf region. It covered both margins, together with much of the basin floor, of the Irish sector of the Rockall Trough and extended into the northern part of the Porcupine Seabight. Th...
متن کاملLong-term change in the abyssal NE Atlantic: The ‘Amperima Event’ revisited
The results from a time series study (1989 to 2005) at a depth of 4850m on the Porcupine Abyssal Plain, NE Atlantic, are presented showing radical changes in the density of large invertebrates (megafauna) over time. Major changes occurred in a number of different taxa between 1996 and 1999 and then again in 2002. One species of holothurian, Amperima rosea, was particularly important, increasing...
